Wilderness Island was set up over five years ago by Jim Alston who has developed it into a unique holiday experience. His long time friend Harry came on board soon after and helps Jim run the Island.
At Wilderness Island you become a part of the family.
Our knowledge of the area we live in is second to none and your comfort and safety is our top priority.
About Jim:
Jim is a local boy of some five generations. He grew up on nearby Yanrey Station and knows this area well. He loves meeting people and wants them to experience the country he has loved his whole life.
He has the endorsement and support of the Traditional Landowners who have given him the responsibility of conserving the eastern gulf region for future generations. You can read about that endorsement here.
After thirty years in the region Jim knows the Exmouth Gulf like the back of his hand. He can share with you an intimate knowledge of its history, geography, land & marine environments.
Jim is one of those guys you just warm to and connect with straight away. He’s friendly, professional, experienced and committed to making your stay an unforgettable one!
About Harry:
“Harry” Butler is Exmouth’s top professional fishing guide.
Harry’s “resume” and results come from more than 30 years of working with the ocean and fishing, 10 years as a commercial fisherman and the last 10 years as a professional guide in and around the fishing grounds of the Exmouth Gulf. Harry’s knowledge of fish species and behaviour is unsurpassed in this area and you will certainly benefit from that.
He has an uncanny ability to know exactly where to go to get the catch you’re after. Between knowing the tides, the right spots, the best tackle along with how to work your lure you’re pretty well guaranteed a catch… everytime!
Harry grew up in Port Hedland and even as a 10 year old held many championships as a keen fisherman.
Harry epitomizes the best of the North West, having lived and fished the Exmouth Gulf for many years, he combines a genuine appreciation for the land and environment with a ready sense of humour that together capture the uniqueness of this amazing area. He is just one of the exceptional characters of the North West of Western Australia. Harry guarantees that you will join the long list of fishermen that return to Exmouth and the Gulf each year to catch and enjoy the best fishing adventures you’ll ever experience.
Harry will even help you to get the evidence of your catch for the world and your mates and family at home to see it on-line and on this site.
Harry is also known as “Ningaloo Harry” even though his life is spent in the gulf itself. The area is inhabited by more than 500 species of tropical fish and 220 species of coral and Harry and others like him only use “catch and release”.
Harry’s dream when he was a child was to live on an island and he’s living that dream. It’s an island by mangroves that is just off the mainland and looks across to the peninsula.
Harry life is the resident caretaker and fishing guide on “Wilderness Island”.
The only eco-island in the area where you can live amongst the wild elements of this paradise in absolute luxury. If it’s quiet you want, you’re in the right place. If it’s adventure with nature at it’s most natural and beautiful then you’re in the right place.
If you want the best fishing adventures on the whole planet then you are most definitely in the right place. There is not much that Harry has not seen, done and experienced around these parts and is willing to have you join him in this unique spot.
About Shane:
Shane grew up in Exmouth and has been fishing since he could walk. It is his passion in life and he has always made a living from fishing one way or another.
Even when living inland in the Kimberley region, he ran fishing charters on the Fitzroy River using an airboat. Shane’s passion for the outdoors, the environment and the fishery is evident after spending a day out with him. He has a wealth of knowledge for his local waters and offers a variety of options from sight casting to queenfish and golden trevally on the flats, to offshore marlin fishing and pretty much everything in between.
Shane has guided in far North Queensland for a number of years, he holds a Master Class V ticket and currently holds an IGFA World Record for a golden trevally on 6kg line class.
About Kat and Kim:
Kat and Kim are two Danish girls who decided to take a gap year from their studies. They decided that Australia was the way to go, and with only backpacks and passports they left Denmark.
After driving up the West Coast the girls settled down in Exmouth for a while, before driving all the way around Australia, only to find themselves heading back after just three months on the road.
A short stay at Wilderness Island and the girls decided to leave mainstream life behind. Return flights have been postponed twice already and Kat and Kim have settled in to life on a desert island.
You will find Kat and Kim are the perfect camp hosts and have adopted the great Aussie tradition of sitting around a camp fire telling yarns.
